John Swanson to Run for Polk County Commissioner Position 2
Rickreall- John Swanson from north Polk County will file for the County Commissioner position currently held by Craig Pope, who has made it clear he will not seek reelection.
Swanson is the Chief of Staff for Sen. Bruce Starr, a small business owner, and is the Executive Director of the Leadership Fund – which supports a more balanced state legislature. John lives north of Rickreall with his wife, Kim, and two children. The Swansons previously resided in West Salem.
John volunteers for youth programs and YMCA sports in the Monmouth–Independence area. The Swanson’s church home is Cultivate Community Church in Monmouth.
Swanson said, “What’s most exciting about county governance is how I’ll see the impact of my work each day. Polk County is a wonderful place, and I want to be hands on in keeping it that way.”
Swanson added, “Craig Pope has been a class act his entire career. His commitment to Polk County is renowned. I wish him many, many years of happiness and hope he will remain a resource.”

Rep. Anna Scharf, the State Representative for most of rural Polk County said: “John will be a valuable asset to Polk County as a commissioner. His inside knowledge and connections to state government will benefit the county and our residents. I’m behind him 100% and am already making calls on his behalf.”
Rep. Lucetta Elmer, the State Representative from McMinnville whose district includes northwestern Polk County said: “I can’t wait to work with John as a commissioner. He is a real team player and knows how to build consensus. I support him all the way.”
Sen. Bruce Starr, the State Senator for rural Polk County said: “Easy choice for Polk County. John Swanson will make a great commissioner and will add volumes of depth to help the county’s legislative delegation find solutions. John is pragmatic and well suited for nonpartisan office.”
Senator Brian Boquist (2009-2025) said: “John is exactly who voters should choose for commissioner. He will think critically and is unafraid to do the right thing.”
Honorable Raquel Moore-Green (State Representative 2019-2023) said: “John Swanson has the sincere desire to serve his community. His knowledge of and experience in the intersection of county and state issues will be a great asset as we face ever-evolving challenges. John’s commitment to excellence will serve the citizens of Polk County well.”
Senator Larry George (2007-2015) said: “John Swanson is a decisive leader with solid judgment and temperament. He is a problem-solver with a perspective that anticipates issues before they become problems. It is an honor to support John for Polk County Commissioner!”
Sen. Daniel Bonham, the Senate Minority Leader said: “John Swanson has my whole-hearted endorsement as he runs for Polk County Commission. Don’t be surprised to see me out canvassing and putting up signs for John – I sincerely hope you’ll join me. Polk County is fortunate to have John step up and run – he brings a strong work ethic, experience, and integrity to the position. I look forward to seeing him serve effectively the people of Polk County.”
Honorable Jessica George (State Representative 2021-2023) said: “I urge others to join me in supporting John Swanson for County Commissioner. I know John as a man with impeccable integrity and the credibility to get things done for Polk County. John is an example of the ‘solution-first’ leaders we need in local government.”
Jason Williams, the Executive Director of the Taxpayers’ Association of Oregon said: “John Swanson has a decades-long history winning battles against new taxes and fees. Polk County will be well positioned in tough budget times with John because he knows how to spot waste. We absolutely support him.”
Lois Anderson, the Executive Director of Oregon Right to Life said: “I have known John for years, and he has been a consistent voice in defense of the right to life for the most vulnerable - unborn babies. He has also advocated for policies that support mothers and help families flourish. He will make a great county commissioner.”
